How to check career information

Not everything you read about careers is true or current. Here is how to check.

Ask four questions about any claim

  • Who is saying it? A professional body, an institution or an employer is usually more reliable than an anonymous post.
  • How do they know? Is there data, a date and a source, or is it opinion?
  • Is it current? Requirements and fees change. Check the date.
  • Does it apply here? Information about another country may not apply in Nigeria.

Where to verify common things

  • University admission requirements: JAMB’s official brochure and the institution’s own admissions office.
  • Professional registration: the regulator for that profession, for example COREN for engineers or the Pharmacists Council of Nigeria.
  • What a job involves: real job adverts and people who do the work.
  • Scholarships: the funder’s own website or office. See “Finding scholarships safely”.

Be careful with any claim that a field “guarantees” a job, income or status. No field does.
