Your first CV

How to write a clear, honest one- or two-page CV, even with little work experience.

What to include

  • Contact details: name, phone, a professional email, and your city or state.
  • Short profile: two or three lines on who you are and what you are looking for.
  • Education: most recent first.
  • Experience: jobs, NYSC, internships, volunteering, projects and leadership roles all count.
  • Skills: specific ones you can show, not a long list of adjectives.

Make each point show evidence

Instead of “responsible and hard-working”, write what you did and what happened: “Organised a revision club for 25 classmates; 20 attended weekly.” Use real numbers only.

Tailor it

Read three adverts for the kind of role you want. Use their language where it honestly fits your experience, and move the most relevant points to the top.

Check it

  • One or two pages.
  • No spelling mistakes; ask someone to proofread.
  • Saved as a PDF with your name in the file name.
  • Everything on it is true.
